“Start before you’re ready. Good things happen when we start before we’re ready.” Steven Pressfield
When Self-Development Becomes Procrastination
Self-development, learning, and growth are worthy pursuits with countless rewards.
…And they can also become very convenient excuses not get started.
I love learning new tools. I love uncovering insights about how I think, how I operate, and what drives me. There’s a rush that comes with discovering a new perspective! Those moments when something clicks and opens a new door inside are amazing. I call that feeling life juice.
But here’s the truth I’ve had to face:
Believing I need to learn something new before I can begin being my truest self is a lie.
I don’t need anything I don’t already have. What I need is action.
What Your Results Reveal
The results in any area of life will tell you what you truly care about or at least how you’re currently operating.
Take self-love, for example. Ideally, I’d love to be completely self-motivated, grounded, and unaffected by outside judgment. And I am still growing into that version of myself.
But growth doesn’t require pretending I’m already there.
Right now, external accountability works. Deadlines with other people motivate me. So instead of criticizing myself for not being “evolved enough,” I use what works today while I continue building the skills I want for tomorrow.
That’s not failure. That’s strategy.
Using the Tools You Already Have
My mom and I both thrive on accountability. We’ll call each other, share a project or a to-do list, set a timeline, and follow up. It’s simple and it works.
Refusing to use effective tools just because they aren’t the tools you wish you needed is self-sabotage disguised as growth.
You don’t get extra credit for making progress harder than it needs to be.
Growth is not about waiting until you’re perfectly internally motivated.
It’s about moving forward with the resources you already have while you build new ones along the way.
A Perspective That Sticks With Me
One book that beautifully reinforces this idea is Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.
One line that captures the spirit of creative permission:
“If you are supporting yourself financially and not bothering anyone else, then you are free to do whatever you want with your life.”
It’s a reminder that we don’t need permission to begin. We just need willingness.
Are you ready to get honest?
Take an honest look at something you’ve been “preparing” for.
Ask yourself: Am I truly learning to move forward or learning to delay?
Then choose one small action you can take this week using the tools you already have not the ones you think you should have.
If you want support turning insight into action, stay connected. Growth happens faster when it’s shared, reflected on, and practiced in real time. If you cannot find that one small action, call me for a consultation and we can figure it out together.
